Building on Tarnavskoho St, 39

A three-story residential building, designed as a revenue house. It is skillfully placed in a hilly landscape: located on a rise, the facade is divided in half by an almost imperceptible bend.

This way, the object is neatly “squeezed” into the street corner.

Thanks to this trick, standing close to the building, one may have the impression that the house opens like a book. It can be particularly clearly seen, if one focuses on the windows.

An archival photo shows how the building was fitted among the existing modernist buildings.

Three central windows on the facade are framed in artificial stone frames.

The entrance door, accentuated with rustication, has been preserved. It has a porthole window and an imitation of ribbon glazing on the side.

The drawing of the main facade shows that a flagpole mast once rose above the building. The plan of the house floors next to it has ceiling heights specified and a gable roof depicted in it; the roof is successfully disguised as a flat one – it is not visible from the street that it is gable, as the height differences are hidden in the back of the house.

The interior is even more expressive. Here, the ground floor has black-and-white tiles laid in geometric patterns of various shapes. Landings between the floors are made of the chessboard-shaped pinkish cement tiles.

The handrails are made of bent metal and wood, with a particularly eye-catching forged abstract pattern between the wooden railing and the concrete staircase.

Almost all authentic doors to the apartments covered with veneer have been preserved. On the top floor, the doors are slightly different in shape and coating from others in the house. Also, the tile on the floor is slightly different – here, it is laid out in stripes, not in a chessboard pattern.
